Brenson is a Post-doc in peptide therapeutics at Purdue University, where he is developing peptide drugs to protect the kidneys from ischemia/reperfusion injury during heart surgery. Kidney injury occurs in up to 40% of heart surgery patients and results in diminished quality of life, rising healthcare costs, and significantly increased patient mortality. His approach is to design better “mimics” of a naturally occurring human hormone, ones that are long-lasting, safe, and effective at shielding the kidneys from damage. What draws him to this research is the conviction that peptide drugs, with their remarkable binding strength, target selectivity, favorable safety profiles, and design space, will continue to push the frontier of modern therapies.

With his work at Purdue, he hopes to someday commercialize a viable product that could help millions. And he has continuously pursued the end-to-end knowledge - from discovery and pharma development, to manufacturing and regulations – to make that happen. Currently, he is pursuing a Master of Science in Biotechnology Innovation and Regulatory Science. Most recently, he completed an entrepreneurial education program with the NIH focused on technology commercialization and translation. Brenson is a true systems thinker and doer!
